In Thailand, Koh Samui is second only to Phuket as the most popular island destination. Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand and has a landscape that is similar to Phuket’s hilly terrain. The hills of Samui make a formidable bike course, where you will climb hills in temperatures that hover at 35 degrees Celsius and a humidity level of up to 95 percent. Gerard Iacono, a Frenchman who is co-president of Koh Samui Triathlon, and the Mayor of Samui, formed a partnership in 1984 when Samui and the city of Embrun merged for the infamous Embrunman race.
The athletes will go from a very warm, two loop, non wetsuit ocean swim and leave the host Hansar Hotel to a 60 km bike loop that follows the main coastal road around the island. From there, the athletes separate south of the island in Nathon and stay on flat roads for a 30km run under the hot sun. By the time the athletes racked their bikes and made it to the transition area, they looked like they had already begun the race. Called “The Hottest Show on Earth,” three former winners of the Malaysian Ironman, including the current record holder Marino Vanhoenacker, Faris Al Sultan and Belinda Granger all agreed that Samui raised the mercury levels to new heights.
The Koh Samui Triathlon 2013 will capture the attention of the worlds best professionals because of the huge purse of over $400,000 US dollars. Fifteen years ago, Samui was not much more than a few hotels and restaurants but today, it is a beautiful place for a destination race with designer hotels and world class resorts that is sure to please both the athletes and visitors.
