The Origin of Araw ng Kagitingan or Day of Valour
The Day of Valour began with the day the Japanese soldiers occupied the Philippines demanding that 76,000 soldiers from America, China and the Philippines surrender and hike to a Camp in San Fernando, which was a distance of about 145 kilometers on April 9, 1942. So that they would be able to form other battle plans against the Japanese armies in other areas in the Philippines, the Philippine soldiers complied with the Japanese demands. Because of the surrender of the soldiers in Bessang, Corregidor and Bataan, the movement of the Japanese armies were slowed, allowing the Filipino and American liberation forces to overpower the Japanese armies in the Philippines. As a further result, thousands of Filipino, American and Chinese armies died. To commemorate those who died on behalf of the Philippines during World War II, the Day of Valour, on April 9th has been observed since 1980.
